The remaining structures of the Old Mental Hospital campus of Siena to be renovated.
We the Pergola Cultural Association of doctors, artists, environmentalists, actors and businesspeople are collaborating with the city of Siena, the local universities and the pubic health service to restore the Conolly pavilion, the only panopticon in Europe used for mental health, as a cultural center, archive and urban laboratory. We hope to subsidize the cultural programming therein by converting other vacant structures on the old San Niccolò Psychiatric campus to hostel, bike hotel, cafeteria, visitor center and contemporary artisanal uses. When these historic buildings are rejuvenated they will join their neighbors belonging to the University and the Public health service in an integrated campus modeled in part on the ideal city, a diffuse village of work, play, research and cultural production. The project updates and enlivens the unfinished Enzo Zachiroli plans of the late 1990’s and complements the public health related gut renovations already underway for the Chiarugi and Kraepelin buildings.
